Nothing about adoption is easy! Except maybe the relief of finding your child and knowing her face but then a whole new uneasiness begins. I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning.
Our adoptions have begun with a myriad of ways, ALL with one commonness, God’s Hand on each one. He has revealed each face to me except EK and her referral came to us as we watched her face appear on our computer screen on January 27, 2006. A day forever etched on my heart. With EK, we chose our adoption agency first (CCAI) and worked through paperwork plus home study before being matched.
The six matches since then have been somewhat different due to a special need diagnosis. Most children adopted from China these have a need identified and families decid if it is one they can handle for lack of a better word. SJ and WP came to us with heart defects, EC cerebral palsy (which she didn’t have), PC with spina bifida, HM hydrocephalus, and CA will come with heart defect as well.
I hesitate to say this next statement because most people can’t relate unless they’ve been through the adoption and matching process but here it goes.
We didn’t choose our children because we could handle their special need.
We chose our children because they WERE our children and looking at their face revealed the need to bring them home.
Their face pulled us in and honestly it didn’t matter what the file revealed about their special need diagnosis. They were OUR children and nothing would stop us from bringing them home!
With SJ, our agency BAAS found her file on the shared list and emailed it to us for review. We were warned her special need was way more than we had suggested we could handle (there’s that word again) but we opened the file anyway. There was our little girl staring back at us. We knew. We had to go. We had no clue about Tetralogy of Fallot or she would need open heart surgery three days home or major dental surgery 6 months home.
Bottom line: We won’t always KNOW the whole story or how things will work out but God knows and we have to trust His provision. We chose WP because of a photo God revealed giving us a major connection to him.

Now we are on our way back for CallaAnne.
With each adoption God reveals His Bigness more and more.
Adoption is a great calling and forever changes the lives of orphans AND families. Scott and I ask each other all the time ‘What if we had missed this’! I’ve said it before… We don’t ever know HOW God is going to provide for our adoptions but there is NO doubt He has called us to it.
And when He calls us TO it, He will take us THROUGH it.
